Last year I wrote briefly about this wondrous moment in Detroit, when the bulbs and flowering trees and bushes planted decades ago by people who have left the city come into full bloom. . .

This year a cop car pulled up next to me while I was taking these pictures; they were pretty sure I was in the neighborhood to buy drugs, and were very interested in the plastic bag peeking out of my pocket (until I showed them it was the empty bag every conscientious dog owner brings with him in case his dog poops). They looked at me like I was crazy (with the amount of trash strewn about the neighborhood, who picks up dog shit?). When I explained I was in the neighborhood to take pictures of flowers and plants blooming even after the people left, the explanation was so preposterously lame they drove away shaking their heads.
